What I look at for you
- Liability first: most businesses start with general liability, then add what the work needs.
- Certificates: if a landlord, client or city wants proof of insurance, I match the limit they ask for.
- Home businesses: home policies usually leave out business stock, equipment and client visits.
- Advice and services: if you give advice for a fee, you may need professional liability as well.
- Equipment and stock: tools that travel between job sites, and stock in a shop or garage.
- Vehicles: work vehicles need the right ICBC rating, which I can set up alongside the rest of your policy.
Before you call
Rough figures are fine for a first quote. I confirm the details with you before a policy starts.
- A plain description of what the business does
- Your revenue, staff and any subcontractors
- Values for equipment, stock and contents
- Any contract or lease that asks for insurance
- Your current policy and renewal date
Questions people ask me
Is business insurance required by law in BC?
Usually not. In practice, a landlord, client or city asks for proof before you sign a lease, start a job or get a permit. Some professions have their own rules too.
What is a certificate of insurance?
A summary, one page long, that proves your policy exists and shows your limits. The limit they want is written in your contract, so read it before you buy.
Do I need cyber insurance?
It depends on what you hold. If you store customer details, take card payments or couldn't work with your systems locked, it's worth pricing. Standard business policies usually leave cyber events out.
