Privacy policy
What this site collects, why, where it goes, and how to see, correct or withdraw it under BC's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

Who is responsible for your information
I operate this website. I'm a Level 2 General Insurance Agent and ICBC Autoplan broker, licensed by the Insurance Council of British Columbia, and I quote and place insurance through InsureBC (Squamish) Insurance Services Ltd.
I'm the contact for privacy questions about this website and for any of the requests described below: nikkit@insurebc.ca or 778-710-7477.
What the quote form collects
What you type
- Your name, email address, phone number, how you would like to be contacted, a good time to reach you, your city or town and your postal code.
- Your answers to the questions for the type of insurance you choose. Depending on the type, these can include your date of birth, marital status, whether you smoke, your occupation, the address and details of a property, details of a vehicle, boat or recreational vehicle (such as year, make, model, VIN and plate), your insurance and claims history, whether a vehicle is registered to a person or a company (and the company's name), how many people live in the household or work for the owner, and anything you add in the notes box.
- Any documents you choose to attach, such as a current policy page or photos. Only PDF, JPEG, PNG, HEIC and WebP files are accepted, up to 15 MB each and three per request.
The quick quote. Some pages have a shorter form with five steps. It asks what you're insuring and a question or two about it, when your current policy renews, the property address for a home or condo (or the name and city for a business), and your name, phone number and email address. It takes no documents and no licence number.
The call back request. The home page also has a short form for asking me to call you instead of filling in a quote form. It asks which type of insurance you want to talk about, your name, phone number and email address, when you would like the call (morning, afternoon, evening or any time) and, if you like, a note of up to 300 characters. It takes no documents and no licence number. You tick a box to agree that I may contact you, and that is recorded with the time and the wording you saw.
Driver's licence number. For ICBC Autoplan requests only, the form asks for the BC driver's licence number of the vehicle's registered owner and of its primary driver. If the vehicle is registered to a person, both are optional and you can leave them blank; I will ask when it is needed. If it is registered to a company, the primary driver's number is needed to send the request. Each number you give is encrypted before it is saved, is never put in an email or a printout, and I can only see it by clicking a button that records the viewing. Both are deleted automatically 90 days after you submit, even though the rest of your request is kept longer. On any other type of insurance the form refuses a licence number.
Your consent
When you submit, your consent to be contacted about the quote and your acknowledgement that this is a quote request, not an application, are recorded with the time and the version of the wording you saw. Marketing consent is optional, off by default and recorded separately with its own time. Leaving it unchecked has no effect on your quote.
On the quick quote, you tick a box to agree that I may contact you about the quote, and that is recorded with the time and the wording you saw. The statement that it is a request for a quote, not an application, is shown above the Send button instead of as a checkbox, and that wording is recorded too. If you tick "Remind me before my renewal date", that choice is recorded with its own time. I use it only to get in touch before your renewal, and you can withdraw it at any time.
Recorded automatically
- Your approximate country and city, as estimated by Cloudflare from your internet connection.
- How you found this site: the page you submitted from, the page you first landed on, the website that sent you here (if your browser says) and any campaign tags in the link you followed (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content and utm_term, for example, which advertisement or search term brought you here). If the form asks how you heard about me and you answer, that answer is kept too. This is used only to see which of my efforts bring in requests. No advertising pixels or third party trackers are on this site.
Your IP address is not stored with your request. It is used in two short lived ways: it is sent to Cloudflare Turnstile to check the request comes from a person (see below), and a one way scrambled version of it is used to count how many requests one connection sends in an hour. A request over that count is still accepted, and is marked in my records as one of many from the same connection. That scrambled value cannot be turned back into your address and is deleted within a day; the mark stays with the request.
Saved in your own browser
The quote form keeps your answers in progress in your browser for the current tab only (sessionStorage), so going back a step or reloading the page loses nothing. They are deleted when you close the tab, are cleared when you choose Start over or send the form, and do not reach me or any server until you submit. Files you attach are held in memory only. The one thing the form remembers after the tab closes is whether you turned its sound off (localStorage, a single on or off setting). The quick quote does the same with its own answers in progress: they stay in the current tab only and are cleared when you send it. It shares the one sound setting with the quote form. Apart from that, the site's own script remembers for the current tab only (sessionStorage, no cookies) how you arrived, meaning the campaign tags, the referring website and the first page you landed on, so they can be sent with your request. That record is deleted when you close the tab.
Why it is collected
I collect personal information on this site to prepare the quotes you ask for and to arrange insurance through InsureBC (Squamish) Insurance Services Ltd. The automatically recorded details are collected to keep the form working and protect it from automated and fraudulent submissions.
If you opt in to marketing, I also use your contact details to send you occasional insurance tips and renewal reminders, and you can withdraw that consent at any time. If you ask for a renewal reminder on the quick quote, I use your contact details to get in touch before your renewal date. Nothing collected on this site is sold or rented, and nothing is used to build advertising profiles.
Where it is stored
- Your request is stored in a private database (Cloudflare D1) and any attached files in private file storage (Cloudflare R2). Both are run by Cloudflare, Inc. The files have no public address; only I can download them, after signing in.
- The storage is set up in Cloudflare's Western North America region. Cloudflare does not offer storage that stays inside Canada, so your information is stored outside Canada, most likely in the United States, and while it is there it may be subject to the laws of that country, including lawful access by its authorities.
- Cloudflare also runs the code that receives the form and keeps short lived system logs, as any web host does.
- The emails described below are delivered to my business mailbox, which is hosted by Google (Google Workspace). Google may also store them outside Canada, including in the United States.
Emails
The notification to me says only that a new request has arrived: your first name, the type of insurance, the time and a link to the page, protected by a sign in, where I read the details. For an ICBC Autoplan request it also gives the vehicle's plate or registration number, or says the vehicle is a new purchase along with the VIN or year, make and model if you gave them. For a call back request it also gives the time of day you chose for the call. It does not contain your phone number, email address, address, date of birth, driver's licence number, note or files. It is sent through Cloudflare's email service to my business mailbox. If a request has not been opened within 12 hours, a reminder may also be sent to me once a day; it gives only the number of unopened requests and a link to the sign in page, with nothing about you.
For a quick quote, the notification's subject starts with "QUICK QUOTE: call now". It holds the same details as any other notification and nothing more.
Your filled questionnaire to me. For a home, condo, course of construction or marine request, from the full form or the quick quote, a second email to the same mailbox carries a PDF: the insurer's questionnaire for that type of insurance, filled in with what you entered, including your name, contact details, the address of the property, your date of birth if you gave it, and your answers. If you answer the optional follow up questions later, an updated copy is sent the same way. It never includes a driver's licence number or the files you attached. No questionnaire is emailed for ICBC Autoplan, business, policy review or call back requests. It is sent through Cloudflare's email service.
A confirmation to you may be sent, if this feature is switched on, to the email address you entered. It contains a fixed "got it, here is what happens next" message and my contact details, and none of your answers. It is also sent through Cloudflare's email service.
Spam protection
The form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to tell people from automated programs. Turnstile runs a check in your browser and sends Cloudflare technical signals such as your IP address and browser characteristics. Cloudflare states that Turnstile does not use this to target advertising. If Turnstile cannot run, the form cannot be submitted, and you can call or email me instead.
Who can see it
Only I can open submitted requests. The admin pages need a sign in: Cloudflare Access with my approved email account or, until that is switched on, a password that only I hold. Every visit to those pages is checked again by the website itself. Each time a request is viewed, printed or updated, a file or filled questionnaire is downloaded or a driver's licence number is revealed, that action is logged.
What you submit is then shared only as needed to do the work you asked for:
- InsureBC (Squamish) Insurance Services Ltd., the agency through which I quote and place insurance
- The insurers asked to quote or issue your policy
- ICBC, where your request involves Autoplan or another ICBC transaction
Cloudflare, and Google for my email, store and process the information on my behalf as service providers, not for their own use. Your information is not shared with anyone else for their own marketing.
How long it is kept
Your request, its notes and any files you attached are deleted automatically 24 months after the last activity on it. Activity means you submitting it, or me updating its status or adding a note. Any driver's licence number you gave is deleted 90 days after you submit, whatever the status of your request. Deleted information can remain in Cloudflare's automatic recovery copies of the database for up to 30 days before it is gone completely.
This automatic deletion covers the website's own storage. The notification and questionnaire emails in my mailbox are not deleted automatically; they stay there until I delete them, and a deletion request (see below) covers them too.
If you become a client, the information needed for your policy is placed in InsureBC's client records, and from then on it is kept for as long as the agency is required to keep insurance records. The answers in progress saved in your own browser are deleted when you close the tab or clear your browser's site data.
Cookies, fonts and analytics
This site sets no advertising or tracking cookies. Its fonts are served from this website; no third party font service is used. The site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits. It sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser, does not build a profile of you and does not follow you across other websites. When a page loads, a small script from Cloudflare sends the address of the page, the website that referred you (if your browser says), your browser and device type, and how quickly the page loaded. I see only totals, such as page views per page, top referring sites, countries and page speed, never a record of any one visitor. Cloudflare provides this as a service provider, and it is not linked to anything you submit in the quote form.
The quick quote also counts how many people see and finish each of its steps, so I can tell where people stop. When you reach a step, your browser sends my website the type of quote, the step number, the page and a random number made up for that browser tab. That number is kept in the tab only (sessionStorage) and is gone when you close it. Only the date is recorded, not the time. No answers or contact details are recorded with these counts, your IP address is not stored with them (as with the form, a one way scrambled version is used to limit floods and deleted within a day), they are never linked to a request you send and they are deleted after 13 months.
Access, correction and withdrawing consent
Under PIPA you can:
- Ask what personal information this site holds about you, and how it has been used and disclosed
- Ask for a correction if something is wrong
- Ask for your request, including any licence number, to be deleted before the 24 months (or 90 days for the licence number) are up
- Withdraw your consent, including marketing consent, at any time
Send any of these requests to nikkit@insurebc.ca or call 778-710-7477. I will respond within the time PIPA requires. Withdrawing marketing consent stops the marketing and nothing else. Withdrawing consent entirely may mean I can no longer quote for you or service a policy. It does not undo disclosures already reasonably made to arrange your insurance, but the request will be honoured from that point on.
Complaints
If you think your personal information has been handled improperly, raise it with me first using the contact details above. Most problems can be fixed directly. If you are not satisfied with my response, you can complain to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (oipc.bc.ca), the independent office that oversees PIPA.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page and the "Last updated" date at the top will change with it. The date shown is the date the current version took effect.
